Recently 7 of the Valley Christian Varsity Cheerleaders returned from a National Cheerleader’s Association (NCA) Summer Camp. The camp was held at UC Davis and had over 300 participants and 8 other Varsity Squads. Being the smallest squad there it was great seeing the girls learn to adapt quickly to the large groups around them. That being said it was a surprising that the girls earned their first Spirit Stick the first night of camp. Naturally they weren’t the loudest squad there but their genuine spirit definitely made an impact with the staff and other campers.
As the week went on, the girls learned many new routines and skills for game and competition scenarios. Their learning abilities were tested during 2 separate evaluation periods. They were awarded Excellent Ribbons for their Game Day Cheer, Performance Cheer and 1st Evaluation Chant; and a Superior Ribbon for their 2nd Evaluation Chant.
Being such a small squad the girls quickly impressed the NCA staff with their skills and abilities. I received many compliments on their positive attitudes, willingness to work with others, motion technique, awesome stunting and safety abilities. Their NCA buddy was also really impressed with how well they worked with their Buddy Squad the El Cerrito Gauchos.
On the last day of camp the girls had the opportunity to compete for 2 of the 3 tops trophies received at camp. They competed in Champion Chant against the 8 other Varsity Squads and Game Day Top Team Cheer against 4 other squads. I am happy to report that they took home both trophies! They also took home a bid to compete at the NCA Nationals held in Dallas, Texas, an award for Excellence in Stunt Safety and Spotting and a Spirit Stick (they were awarded a spirit stick every night at camp). The girls quickly nicknamed themselves “The Little Squad That Could”.
Our squad also had some individual honors; Christal Chiu, Summer Chiu, Laura Laszik, and Hannah Ludden were nominated by staff to try-out for the NCA All American Team. This a great honor as staff saw excellent technique in all or some of the following skills: Motions, Jumps, Stunting, Tumbling and Leadership. Christal, Summer, and Hannah were acknowledged as All American Team members.
Congratulations Valley Christian Varsity Cheer! You did an awesome job at camp and really impressed me and many others. I am so proud of all of you. Remember “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
