Mental discipline and physical intensity characterized the Viking Wrestling Team's performance at the Camillari Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Granada High School in Livermore on Saturday (1/16). Dustin Jang, Derek Lokker, TJ Heal, Logan Slater, and Michael Wardhana applied their well-practiced techniques in order to control their opponents during much of the wrestling. The team's development goal for Saturday was to improve their takedown skills, and they did. Even against more experienced wrestlers, who often won the match, our guys were able to shut down the opponent's takedown shots and set up their own attack -- a key strategy in wrestling.
The two youngest members of the team, freshman Logan Slater and sophmore Dustin Jang, each pinned an opponent with some of the best technical wrestling of their season to date. Senior Derek Lokker also stuck and opponent to make three Viking pins for the day.

Logan Slater, TJ Heal, and Derek Lokker competed in a JV wrestling tournament at Liberty High School in Brentwood on Saturday (Jan 9th). All three wrestlers faced very tough competition from established wrestling power houses like Livermore, De La Salle, and Liberty. In the face of this challenge, the small contingent wrestled hard and showed substantial increase in their wrestling skills. After the competition, the team members even received compliments from an official at the tournament about their development as new wrestlers.
The next tournament will be at Granada High School in Livermore this Saturday, the 16th. Wrestling starts at 9:00AM. Come show your support for our dedicated wrestlers and enjoy the excitement!

The Valley Christian Athletic Department is excited to announce the launch of our first-ever high-school wrestling team this year! All high-school boys are welcome. It is a winter sport; practices will start in early November. Fall athletes can start practicing after the completion of their current season.
Wrestling has a long history in cultures around the world. Origins of wrestling can be traced back 15,000 years to cave drawings in France. Come make history by being part of the first Vikings Wrestling Team!
The popularity of wrestling continues around the world. Over 135 nations sponsor a wrestling federation. It is one of the top three medal winning sports for the United States in international competition. In the United States, High School boys’ wrestling was the sixth most popular sport with 267,378 young men participating last year, the highest number since 1980.
Scholastic wrestling is very safe and provides opportunities for competitors of all sizes. Regulations on which techniques are legal are there to avoid injury. Weight control and hydration are strictly monitored and regulated so that the student-athletes are healthy and the emphasis is on competition, not weight loss.
No prior athletic experience is required. Valley Christian’s wrestling program will enable student-athletes to participate in this historic and growing sport, where they can benefit from all the finest traditions of VCS athletics: spiritual, academic, and athletic excellence; maintaining the highest degree of sportsmanship; conditioning to excellent physical fitness, and honoring God in all that we do. We will pursue Victory with Honor.
The athletic department and coaches would be happy to hear from all interested students. If you would like to learn more about Viking Wrestling or want to join the team, please contact Athletic Director Brendi Ashton (925-560-6252, bashton@dublinvcc.org) or Coach Dan Burton (925-337-4158, VikingWrestlingInfo@gmail.com).
